Eminences,
Excellences,
Chers Collègues,
Messeigneurs,
Mesdames et Messieurs,

I'll take the opportunity to mention the presence among us of Mister Woods, Minister for Education and Science of the Irish government.

Speech of H.E. Mr. Thierry Muûls, Ambassador of Belgium to the Holy See (Official Dinner at the Belgian Embassy)

State Minister,

The high functions you held during your distinguished career, your lifelong personal commitment at the head of a political party that holds the Christian dimension fundamental in its political aspirations, and, last but not least, your personal and family roots at the heart of the diocese of Namur, all these considerations designate you as the ideal person to represent His Majesty the King and the Belgian government at the time of the glorious beatification of one of the twentieth century's most remarkable figures of Christianity.

I thank you for having accepted this task.

Your Eminencies,
Ministers,
Your Excellencies,
Dear Colleagues, My Lords,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

An Irishman born in 1858 who became Belgian citizen in 1909 brings us together this evening. The abbey of Maredsous was, according to the expression of Saint Benedict's rule, the workshop were Dom Columba Marmion forged his life of saintliness over 37 years. Nevertheless, he had started it in 1877 at the seminary in Dublin, where he became a teacher before entering the abbey of Maredsous in 1886. But it is the personal saintliness of the man who influenced generations of priests, monks, nuns and layman in Belgium and elsewhere between 1920 and 1960 that the Church wants to emphasize tomorrow when beatifying Dom Marmion.

But how to dissociate Dom Marmion from the abbey he headed ? It seems to me that in the Benedictine spirit I had the privilege to observe right in Maredsous at the time of my studies, the abbey has to be considered as a body of Church of which the abbot, who represents Jesus, is the head. If the humility of the head is whole, the things he realises are nevertheless emanations of the entire community and affect it by solidarity totally, even if it goes without saying that the Church has never beatified and will never beatify a community.

Historically, Maredsous has been one of the great centres of the catholic renewal in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Its founders were close to the circle of men who tried to defend the Papal States at the time of the Italian unification. Yet if the truth must been told, Providence was in guidance. Indeed - and God knows if the century has proven it - what at that time looked like a failure was to be a new departure of a deeper spirituality that would allow the Church to find a renewal of its vocation, this time cleared of the scoria of temporal power that in the end could only mutilate its real image. The Desclée family and the other families associated with the foundation of Maredsous have indeed discerned that a real catholic rehabilitation necessarily meant a return to the sources that could only be guaranteed by the spiritual depth of the monasteries.

When Dom Columba Marmion entered Maredsous the construction of the abbey was being finished and all the building sites were still available for new initiatives.

He founded an abbey school that dispensed an individual education to an elite group, where special attention was given to manual arts and crafts. The manual arts school no longer exists, unfortunately, and many regret this kind of education that combined artistic creation and the protection of the cultural and religious heritage, the sheer beauty of an education that unites the manual, the spiritual and the artistic aspects of life.

Dom Columba Marmion also was at the base of a big scientific development of the sources of religion : the Bible, the Church Fathers, the early history of Belgium, the liturgy, the attention to other churches, the road to ecumenism, the monastic presence in mission countries and so on.

All this is what Dom Columba Marmion meant to Maredsous. New branches grew quickly: Sint Andries Zevenkerken, The Mount Caesar. Figures like Dom Van Caloen appeared, Dom Nève, Dom Gaspard Lefèvre, the creator of the famous missal, or Dom Laurent Baudouin, one of the founding fathers of the monastery of the union of Chevetogne, Dom Kapelle, Dom Botte and may others whose achievements would give a facelift to the Church.

Pope John XXIII, who also will be beatified tomorrow, happy coincidence, prophetically felt that all these great movements, could become the essence of the Church as a whole. He would convoke the second Vatican council, the council of the aggiornamento.

It is generally accepted that the achievements of this council were largely indebted to the actions of figures of Belgian Catholicism among whom it is impossible to omit the figure of Card. Suenens.

These persons have been sustained by the spirituality that was partially drawn on the spirituality of Dom Columba Marmion. His local action had encouraged the monks and nuns around him to take the directions that would inspire the great movements of the renewal of the Church. Dom Marmion's preaching, trough his books, moulded the ecclesiastic generation that would work actively on the second Vatican council.

Belgium can justly be proud that through this beatification the church recognizes the major role played by the third abbot of Maredsous in the recent history of the Church. The honour cannot but reflect on the reputation and the image of our country.
